TOWN OF WAWARSING, N.Y. – The death of a 38-year-old yeshiva teacher at a Hasidic Jewish camp in southern Ulster County is not a criminal matter, a county sheriff’s lieutenant said Monday.
The teacher, identified by members of the Hasidic community as Pinchas Elya Weinberger, was found dead in his bed Monday morning at the Kasho Camp in Wawarsing, prompting an investigation by the sheriff’s office.
Monday afternoon, Detective Lt. Dirk Budd said the death was “not suspicious” and appeared to be from natural causes, though he did not elaborate.
The Jewish online publication Yeshiva World News said in reporting the death that Weinberger worked at the Satmar Yeshiva in Monsey, Rockland County, during the school year and at the camp in Wawarsing during the summer.
A yeshiva is an Orthodox Jewish school.
Weinberger’s father, Hillel Weinberger, is a rabbi in Mount Kisco.
