A pipe bomb exploded in a garbage can in Seaside Park Saturday morning just as a charity 5k race was about to start.
No one was hurt in the initial blast. New Jersey State Police are investigating a second suspicious package near the blast site, according to a report.
The pipe bomb was in a garbage can on D Street near Ocean Avenue when it exploded. Authorities immediately evacuated the boardwalk and beach area, which is on lockdown.
Runners in the third annual Seaside Semper Five Marine Corps Charity 5K should have been passing the blast site when the pipe bomb went off, but the start of the race was pushed back after someone found an unattended backpack nearby.
The race has since been canceled.
