The NYPD is on high alert Wednesday after getting a tip that a man, who may have pledged allegiance to ISIS, is looking to shoot police officers.
An anonymous tipster called an NYPD detective squad said a local man may be armed and involved in a threat to shoot a cop in New York City, police sources said. Police in Philadelphia also received a similar threat.
According to authorities, the suspect mentioned by the New York City tipster had pledged allegiance to ISIS.
Police are working to substantiate all the details but do warn law enforcement officers to use extreme caution and remain vigilant.
The legitimacy of the threat is still unknown, but they won’t know for sure until they find the alleged suspect.
We need to find him and have a conversation and continue the investigation,” one high-ranking cop said Wednesday.
The man whom police believe may be involved in the alleged plot has outstanding warrants for other crimes and is actively being sought, sources said.
Patrick Lynch, the president of the NYPD’s rank-and-file union, reminded cops to be on alert for potential threats.
“New York City police officers recognize that they are always a potential target for terrorists and political extremists,” Lynch said.
“The PBA is reminding all of our members to be alert at all times, back each other up and to take all necessary precautions when responding to jobs.”
