Three American citizens were reportedly kidnapped in Iraq’s capital city Baghdad on Sunday night by members of a local militia.
Informed sources in Baghdad confirmed the abduction took place in Baghdad’s southern regions earlier in the day, according to Al-Arabiya.
The US State Department said it was aware of the reports, and is currently trying to find the missing Americans with the help of the Iraqi authorities.
It remains unclear what militias were involved in the apparent abduction, and likewise the identities of the three remain unknown.
Tensions have raised even higher of late between the Iranian backed Shi’ite militias in southern Iraq and the US ally Saudi Arabia, after the Saudis executed a well known Shi’ite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, and Saudi jets hit an Iranian embassy in Yemen during their airstrike campaign.
