The FBI is hunting a man who stole nearly half a million dollars from an armored van in Detroit on Friday morning.
The unidentified male suspect, disguised in a Loomis armored transport uniform, reportedly fooled the van’s driver, who mistook the thief for a coworker, according to the Detroit Free Press. The suspect grabbed two bags of money out of the van before fleeing, MLive.com reported.
“The FBI has taken the lead on the investigation because it seems to be of a suspicious nature,” Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt told the Free Press. “Detroit police are working with the FBI on this heist. We’re still looking at video to see how this person escaped.”
The theft occurred near the Greektown Casino, though that establishment said the funds in the armored van were not “going into or coming out of our property.”
“As always, we are collaborating with law enforcement agencies to share information and video, as needed,” Rock Gaming Vice President of Communications Gayle Joseph told MLive.com.
An FBI spokesperson confirmed their role in the investigation to MLive.com, but wouldn’t give any further information.
