IDF chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot secretly visited Brussels this week in the midst of the tense security situation in Europe, the Hebrew-language Maariv newspaper reported on Friday.
According to the report, Eisenkot met with U.S. Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, the head of the U.S. European Command, in order to discuss the rising terror threats plaguing the continent following the Paris attacks earlier this month.
The Israeli defense establishment deliberated whether to go through with Eisenkot’s visit in light of the raised security levels in the Belgian capital, but eventually the chief of staff’s visit was deemed necessary and he arrived in Belgium at the beginning of the week with an unprecedented security escort, it added.
Israel has reportedly assisted European countries facing a rising terror threat. According to the German Stern magazine, Israel provided Germany with the intelligence information that led to the cancellation of the soccer match between Germany and Holland in Hanover following a bomb threat last week.
