The Texas girl who vanished walking her dog was viciously beaten to death with a hammer over a drug deal, police said.
The details surrounding the death of 14-year-old Kaytlynn Cargill were released as a male acquaintance was arrested in connection to the case.
Authorities are withholding the 16-year-old suspect’s name because he is a juvenile.
Police said that the girl disappeared June 19 from her Bedford apartment.
Her mom reported her missing after her dog was found tied to a fence at a nearby park.
Text messages showed that the girl was going to meet the suspect, who lived in her apartment complex, to buy pot to resell, according to an arrest warrant.
The teen suspect allegedly bludgeoned the teen to death with a hammer during the drug deal and tossed her body into a dumpster, news station KDAF reported.
Her body was found three days later in an Arlington landfill.
The arrest warrant said the suspect deleted text messages and established an alibi with his then-girlfriend. Police discovered a hammer with Cargill’s blood on it in his possession.
“It’s heartbreaking. I was thinking about it like, I don’t know why somebody would do that to such a young girl,” Cargill’s friend Keianna Duff told DFW-TV.
The 16-year-old boy was arrested Friday at Wyatt High School. He was taken into custody at Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center.
