The Westchester dad who murdered his wife and daughter and then killed himself, inflicted the carnage using a 12-gauge shotgun, police said on Saturday, as grisly new details of the horror emerged.
The bodies of New York City property manager Steven Dym, 56, Loretta, 50, and Caroline, 18, were discovered on the second floor landing of their sprawling Fox Hill Road home in well-heeled Pound Ridge at around 11 a.m. on Friday, State Police said.
Caroline and her mother each were shot once in the torso — before Dym blasted himself once in the head, according to police.
The couple was not going through a divorce, and police said they have not received previous calls for domestic incidents involving the couple.
“We are still interviewing family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances, trying to understand why this tragedy occurred,” said State Police Investigator Joseph Becerra.
A police source said Steven may have been struggling financially.
Distraught friends and neighbors said they never would have expected the deadly incident.
“Never ever in my whole entire life [did I see this coming],” Loretta’s close friend, who asked not to be identified, through tears. “I’m in such utter shock, Loretta and just the way she spoke about her husband — her kids were her life.”
She said she did not know of any mounting tensions between the couple.
“It seemed that they were very happy,” the friend said. “She never really spoke about [her relationship] much. Her life was her kids.
The few times I’ve met Steve Dym, he seemed like a great husband and a great father. They were both all about their kids, their kids’ futures. I would have never guessed in a million years.”
The family’s home — a 4,551-square-foot home with five bedrooms, 4¹/₂ bathrooms and a giant backyard with a pool, pergola and pond — is on the market for $1.7 million.
A long-time neighbor who drove past the home on Saturday said he had met the husband and wife about a month and a half ago at a tag sale.
The 88-year-old neighbor, who only gave his first name, Vito, said Steven didn’t give any hints on where the family was moving.
“I don’t know yet,” Dym told Vito at the time. “I haven’t made up my mind.”
Steven was the CEO of Gabriel Management in New York City — a real-estate company founded by his father, Lawrence.
Loretta was a vice president of Club Quarters Hotels in Manhattan. She also volunteered for the Make-A-Wish foundation
Their daughter, Caroline, was a talented student-athlete at Sacred Heart Greenwich.
“She was really genuine,” said one of Caroline’s close friends. “She was just nice to everyone in the grade. She made people laugh very easily. She was always positive.”
Back in Nov. 1992, Steven Dym’s mom, Paula, whacked his dad, Lawrence twice with the back of a hatchet as he slept, according to a report in The Post at the time.
Paula was charged with assault and given a psychiatric evaluation. Lawrence was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. No one answered at a phone number listed for Lawrence on Saturday.
Police said the couple was having “unspecified marital problems” at the time.
