The same day a Los Angeles police officer allegedly had sex with a 15-year-old in the department’s cadet program, he took her to Six Flags Magic Mountain, according to reports.
Anonymous sources with knowledge of the case told the Los Angeles Times that Robert Cain took the teen girl to the Valencia theme park on June 14.
His mother, Maria Cain, said her 31-year-old son seemed anxious following his trip to Six Flags, but firmly denied he sexually abused the 15-year-old.
She added he did not describe his relationship with the teen, only that he expressed concern about their situation.
The Los Angeles Police Department is using her son as a “scape goat” in the larger cadet scandal, Maria Cain said.
Cain was charged in July with two counts each of oral copulation of a person under the age of 16, lewd acts upon a child and unlawful sexual intercourse, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
He’s accused of sexually assaulting the teen on three separate occasions at three different locations in June.
The same day as the Six Flags trip, the department learned members of its cadets program had stolen several cruisers.
The theft sparked an investigation that revealed the cadets had been taking all sorts of equipment, including Tasers, radios and a bullet proof vest, according to the Times.
Amid the investigation, detectives also learned about sex abuse allegations against Cain, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told the newspaper.
A trio of cadets led officers on two separate chases through Los Angeles on June 14, and both of the joy rides ended in crashes. Since, seven cadets including the girl police believe was sexually abused — have been arrested in connection with the thefts.
They were all expelled from the cadets program, which has since been suspended.
Cain at the end of July was charged with 10 felony weapons counts after a search of his home uncovered more than 100 firearms, including modified assault rifles.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was being held on $250,000 bond in a San Bernardino County jail.
It’s unlikely prosecutors will be able to pursue the sexual assault case against the officer until his weapons charges are resolved. Cain is scheduled to appear in court next month.
