The officer who shot and killed a bride-to-be in Minnesota has only been on the job for two years.
Mohamed Noor became the Minneapolis Police Department’s first Somali-American officer when he joined in March 2015.
He was assigned to the 5th Precinct, which encompasses southwest Minneapolis.
A source confirmed to the Star Tribune that Noor fatally shot Australia native Justine Damond on Saturday night after she called 911 to report a possible assault near her home in Fulton.
Noor is represented by attorney Tom Plunkett, who confirmed his client fired his weapon, according to CBS Minnesota.
“We take this seriously with great compassion for all persons who are being touched by this,” Plunkett said.
A source told KSTP that Noor was seated in the passenger seat and his partner in the driver’s seat when he opened fire, hitting Damond multiple times. He and his partner have been placed on administrative leave.
Prior to becoming a cop, Noor worked in property management in the area and has a degree in economics and business administration from Augsburg College, according to a city newsletter.
