German authorities on Friday shut down a popular rock music festival because of a possible terrorist threat, The Associated Press reports.
The Rock am Ring festival was cleared out on its opening night after Koblenz police said they’d received information of a “concrete threat.”
Organizers posted on the festival website that “due to a terrorist threat the police have advised us to interrupt the festival”, according to AP.
It was not immediately clear how many fans were in attendance, but some 90,000 were expected by the end of the weekend at the annual three-day event outside the western town of Nuerburg.
Festival organizers say they hope to be able to go ahead with the program Saturday.
Germany remains under a high-threat terrorist alert following a series of attacks on the country over the past year.
In the first attack, a 17-year-old Afghani with an axe attacked passengers on a train in Wurzburg before being shot dead by security forces.
In the second incident, an attacker set off a bomb in a restaurant in Ansbach, killing himself and wounding 12 others.
The most serious attack took place in December, when terrorist Anis Amri drove a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring 48.
The Islamic State (ISIS) later claimed responsibility for the attack.
Earlier this week, German police arrested a teenage asylum seeker suspected of planning a suicide attack in Berlin.
