The FBI has become involved in the investigation into a newlywed mom who has been missing since a boat accident near the Bahamas.
The announcement comes a week after authorities suspended the search for Isabella Hellmann, 41, who was last seen by her husband standing on the helm of the boat hours before the crash, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The FBI would not confirm if foul play was suspected because the agency does not comment on open cases.
Hellmann’s husband Lewis Bennett, 38, reported her missing May 15 after their 37-foot catamaran hit an unknown object and began to capsize.
Using an emergency radio, Bennett called the U.S. Coast Guard for help.
The Coast Guard was able to rescue Bennett, who was found floating in a life raft. He told investigators that he was beneath the desk sleeping alone when the boat crashed about 30 miles west of the Bahamian island Cay Sal.
Authorities searched for Hellmann by air and sea until May 18.
Coast Guard Miami spokesman Eric Woodall told the Palm Beach Post that there was no evidence that the boat had been struck.
Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that her body is in the boat, but said that no one has gone in the vessel because of its dangerous position underwater.
Hellmann, who is from Delray Beach, Fla., married Bennett a couple of months before the accident. The couple has a 9-month-old daughter named Emelia together, the Sun Sentinel reported.
