An Israeli man in his 40s was shot dead outside a residential building in San Jose in Costa Rica early Thursday, according to local reports.
The Foreign Ministry said the man’s family has been notified and that it was working to return the body to Israel for burial.
His name was reported in an article in the local press but his identification could not be confirmed.
According to the reports citing law enforcement authorities, the Israeli national was leaving an apartment building in the Sabana Sur neighborhood of the capital early Thursday to get into a waiting car when he was accosted by at least three suspects.
He was shot four times in the head and torso and died of his wounds shortly after. He also appeared to have been robbed.
The suspects then fled in a vehicle. Police have launched an investigation and were looking for the perpetrators.
The man is said to have owned a tennis club and been involved in the real estate business. He was not a Costa Rican national or resident but appears visited the country often, according to local reports.
