The crash happened near the State Police Wilton barracks, 301 Ballard Road.
Pratt was just starting his shift about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday when he saw a tractor trailer stopped in the center turning lane of Ballard Road, directly in front of the Wilton State Police barracks, Keeler said.
Pratt stopped his squad car at the barracks entrance and walked into the roadway to help the lost trucker turn around. As soon as he stepped into the still-dark road, he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Ballard Road, a county highway, is a 55 mph zone.
Pratt lived in South Glens Falls and is survived by his fiancée, two sons and a daughter, State Police said.
He joined the State Police on March 30, 1987, and spent his career in Troop G, the zone that includes the Capital Region.
Pratt was assigned to the Traffic Incident Management unit at the State Police station in Wilton.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1979-86.
The major said the driver of the vehicle that hit Pratt was cooperating with investigators. “There does not appear to be any criminality,” Keeler said.
“It was an accident.” He said he doesn’t expect any tickets or charges to be filed.
