A 74-year-old Jewish doctor who was jogging early Wednesday morning in South Chicago was struck and killed by a speeding SUV that failed to stopped for the doctor as he attempted to cross at the intersection of East 67th Street and South Jeffery Avenue, Chicago polcie said.
Gary Toback was jogging at East 67th Street as 40-year-old Pamela Williams was traveling eastbound on 67th Street when she struck Toback. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver and her 2-year-old daughter were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital for minor injures, police spokeswoman Laura Amezaga, told TOT.
Williams was issued a ticket for failing to yield for a pedestrian and she is due back in court on August 18, Amezaga added.
Due to the strong impact from the accident the SUV turned over. The Major Accidents Investigation Unit is continuing the investigation.
Toback worked as a professor for medicine at the University of Chicago, in a statement sent to DNAinfo, the university said.
“We have lost an institutional leader who represented the University of Chicago’s values and aspirations,” the school said in an emailed statement.
