Five people were killed and at least 42 more have been wounded in shootings across the city since Friday evening, according to Chicago Police.
The weekend’s latest homicide happened Sunday morning in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.
Officers responded at 11:25 a.m. to the shooting in the 5700 block of South Union, where 18-year-old Chureno Gatewood had been shot in the upper chest, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Gatewood was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m., authorities said. He lived in the 300 block of Madison Street in Gary, Indiana. Police did not immediately have details on the circumstances of the attack.
Early Sunday, a 38-year-old man was fatally shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.
About 4:45 a.m., Raygene Jackson got into a fight with someone who then pulled out a gun and shot him in the back of the head in the 4500 block of West Maypole, authorities said.
Jackson was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 1:07 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 1200 block of South Kildare.
Four hours before that, one teenager was killed and another wounded in Kenwood.
They were walking in an alley about 12:50 a.m. in the 4700 block of South Ellis when a red minivan pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to Chicago Police.
One boy, thought to be 15 or 16 years old, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The other boy, 16, suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and was taken to a hospital, but additional information was not available.
Late Saturday, a man was fatally shot in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood on the South Side.
Officers responding to a call of a person on the ground about 11 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Calumet found a 23-year-old man lying in a vacant lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, but no one was in custody early Sunday as Area Central detectives investigate.
The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. Saturday in Austin.
A 19-year-old man was driving in the 4900 block of West Augusta about 8:45 p.m. when shots rang out and he suffered three gunshot wounds to the shoulder and side. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The medical examiner’s office did not immediately confirm those three fatalities.
The latest nonfatal shooting happened about 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the West Chatham neighborhood on the South Side,
where someone on a motorcycle shot a 21-year-old man in the leg and groin as he walked in the 8100 block of South Normal, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
At least 40 other people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since about 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Additionally, a 40-year-old man was shot in the arm and leg by a Chicago Police officer during a police investigation into a suspected “gun house” Saturday evening in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
