A police officer was shot in a central Massachusetts town overnight Sunday and sources said the officer later died, Fox 25 Boston reported.
The shooter is on the loose, the station reported.
Massachusetts State Police said the Auburn police officer was shot at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Auburn is about 45 miles southwest of Boston.

The officer was rushed to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, WGGB/WSHM-TV reported.
The officer’s identity was not immediately available.
Investigators believe the officer was driving in a cruiser and collecting ballistic evidence when the shooting took place, WMUR-TV reported.
The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle and police were looking for him, the station reported.

The investigation continues at this hour by both State Police and Auburn Police.
