TORONTO – Police have charged a former Jewish school teacher after he was caught viewing child pornography on a computer at an employment centre last month.
It is alleged the accused was in possession of images of child pornography and viewing them on a public computer at the Employment and Social Services Centre at Lawrence Square on Nov. 6.
Police said a search warrant was executed on Dec. 16 at a home in North York which resulted in the arrest of 55-year-old Stephen Joseph Schacter.
He has been charged with one count of possession of child pornography and appeared in court on Wednesday.
Police said the accused was an elementary school teacher the Eitz Chaim schools between 1986 and 2004.
He was also an administrator at the United Synagogue Day School between 2005 and 2009 and also worked as a private tutor from 2009 until 2011.
Police said evidence seized during the search warrant indicates Schacter may have had inappropriate contact with students in the past.
