Jacob Marberger, 19, was a sophomore at Washington College, where classes have been canceled since Monday. The campus remains closed until the end of the month.
Pennsylvania State Police said Marberger’s body was found shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday in a picnic area of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Albany Township, Pennsylvania. State police said Marberger died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
State police said they found a green Land Rover he was believed to be driving.
No further information was immediately released.
Washington College released a statement, saying: “It is with great sorrow that we must inform you this evening of the passing of sophomore Jacob Marberger. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Marberger family in their time of unimaginable grief.”
“This is a terrible blow to our community, and the outpouring of compassion and support we have shown each other will help us through this difficult time. We need to continue to be supportive of each other as we mourn individually and as a community.”
The college said it will make counseling services available to students when they return to campus.
Police in Chestertown, Maryland, released a statement, saying: “I am sorry to advise that Jacob Marberger, the Washington College student that police have recently been searching for, was found deceased today, Nov. 21, 2015, near Hamburg, Pennsylvania. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding at this difficult time.”
Authorities had been searching for Marberger after an arrest warrant was issued for him on gun charges. Police said Marberger had taken a rifle case from his parent’s home in a Philadelphia suburb Sunday night.
Police said Marberger allegedly displayed a weapon on campus last month, after which, he was suspended from school.
Police said Marberger was allegedly the victim of a prank, and school officials said he had tensions with other students. He was kicked out of his fraternity last week, and he resigned from his student government position Sunday.
