A New Jersey state trooper accused of drunk driving and crashing his car while on duty had a blood alcohol content that was twice the legal limit, documents show.
According to the police documents acquired by nj.com, Sgt. First Class Michael Roadside exited his car looking “disheveled” and tried to pay the driver, Kimberly Wilson, $1,000 if she kept quiet.
The 51-year-old trooper also said that his slurred speech and impaired walking were side effects from a recent surgery. Roadside was later found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.16 percent, police records say.
The Christian Science Monitor says Wlison asked Roadside if he was a police officer because “he was a mess.” She asked where his uniform and weapon were, “at which point he opened his shirt, and a Bud Light cap and a loaded magazine fell to the ground.”
Wilson adds that she yelled at Roadside to get inside his vehicle because, “he was scaring me.”
When police searched Roadside’s car, they found open beer containers. The trooper confessed to drinking nine beers in two and a half hours that night. Once Roadside was notified of the results of the breathalyzer test, he commented, “I’ve been way more drunk than that.”
Roadside is suspended without pay after the incident, which left minor damage to the vehicles and no injuries, nj.com says. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving and having an open alcohol container in a vehicle.
