Officers of the New York Police Departement shot at an African American male who was holding a deadly weapon while escaping an accident in Crown Heights on Wednesday.
The shooting happened at about 12:19 pm, a police spokesperson said. The suspect was involved in a collision on Empire Boulevard and Brooklyn Avenue with a truck and a city bus.
After abandoning his vehicle, the suspect fled down Montgomery Street, holding a gun in his hand while fleeing the scene.
He ignored the calls of police officers to drop the gun and in response shots were fired at him, witnesses said. The suspect was apprehended and treated by a Jewish EMS volunteer for his wounds.
The suspect is described as an African-American male in his late 20s.
He was taken by EMS to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
The NYPD has requested a Level 1 Mobilization at the location, and a crime scene has been established. The area, highly populated by Jewish residents of all ages, is currently closed off.
