Police and the Israel Prison Service are searching for convicted contract killer Yaron Sankar, who they say disappeared from his room at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center on Sunday night..
The escaped prisoner has been serving two life sentences for two murders since 2003 and has been on a hunger strike for the last two and a half months.
The Israel Prison Service says he has a beard and wears a kippa, and was last seen wearing hospital clothes.
Sankar also served as a state witness and gave information to police about a number of crimes, including the 2003 murder of Ashkelon teen Shaked Shalhov.
Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan on Sunday night ordered the IPS to launched an inquiry into the escape in order to determine how the escape occurred.
Sankar was convicted on October 15, 2006 for the contract killing of Haim Shabi, and the murder of Tomer Shabbat, a Ramat Hasharon barber.
