One person was shot dead and three others wounded early Friday at Northern Arizona University and the suspected shooter is in custody, according to reports.
“Details confirmed 4 victims, 1 fatality, 3 wounded. Shooter is in custody. Situation is stabilized. Campus not on lockdown,” university officials said on Twitter.
The motive for the shooting was unclear and school officials have not said if the dead victim was a student, AFP reported.
The wounded victims are being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center, the school said on its Facebook page.
Cops got the call about the shooting at 4:20 a.m. EST, NAU spokeswoman Cindy Brown told The AP.
It occurred in a parking lot outside the Mountain View Hall dorm at the northeast side of the Flagstgaff campus.
The university police are working with the Flagstaff Police Department at the scene.
No other details were immediately available. The school said a press conference is planned for 9 a.m. EST.
In an earlier Twitter message, school officials urged residents of the Mountain View Hall dorm to stay indoors.
Some people complained on the university Facebook page that they didn’t know about what was going on.
“The fact that the residents here at Mountain View have been on lockdown for an hour and didn’t receive any kind of alerts until now is ridiculous,” wrote Marissa Ramirez.
“What is the point of these alerts if we don’t even get them while everything is taking place?”
The university responded: “The first NAUalert text message was sent at 1:30 a.m.” The post included instructions on where to sign up for the alerts.
The four-year public university has more than 25,000 undergraduates.
The shooting comes on the heels of the Oct. 1 rampage at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, in which a 26-year-old madman shot dead nine people before committing suicide.
