An Israeli citizen was killed on Sunday during a trip to Iceland.
The 65-year-old man fell during a hike in the northern European island nation and died from his wounds.
He was taking part in an organized trip just outside the town of Selfoss, located in southwestern Iceland not far from the capital city of Reykjavik.
On Sunday night, the Foreign Ministry’s department for Israelis abroad got involved in the incident, contacting the unfortunate man’s family, the tour guide and local authorities.
Israel’s embassy in the Norwegian capital of Oslo is working to bring the man’s body back to Israel for burial.
Ironically, the death comes just as Iceland is in the news in Israel over the decision by Reykjavik’s city council last Wednesday to boycott all Israeli goods.
The decision received harsh criticism by Jewish groups who noted a full boycott of Israeli goods would have to include computers and cell phones. Even Iceland’s Foreign Ministry slammed the move, saying it did not represent official policy.
Over the weekend, Reykjavik Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson cancelled the boycott, while saying a boycott of products from Jews in Judea and Samaria may still be instituted.
“The decision was poorly prepared. In the past I have taken great pride in preparing all big decisions thoroughly. I’ll admit here and now that I am angry with myself for not doing that, and for not having prepared the decision as well as I would have liked to. This was very unfortunate,” said Eggertsson.
