NEW YORK – If you visit Times Square, you are likely to see an eye-catching attraction one that might make some blush: nearly nude women pose for pictures with tourists.
It is lucrative work for these women who say they can earn hundreds of dollars a day in tips. While plenty of tourists seem to enjoy getting a closer look, the increasing number of these body-painted beauties showing up in Times Square is alarming to some tourists.
Now New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is joining the chorus of critics.
“This situation is going to change. This is what I’ll guarantee you,” de Blasio said. “I’m not going to tolerate it. We’re going to change things.
I think we have just begun to recognize all the tools available here. This is a situation I don’t accept and we will deal with it very aggressively.”
Just how, though, the mayor isn’t sure. Right now the women are protected by the city ordinances and the Constitution.
Saira Nicole has been walking around Times Square wearing nothing but a thong and her patriotic bikini top since September.
“I’m interested to see what he’s going to be able to do,” she said. “I don’t feel like we’re doing anything wrong out here.”
Women we talked to who do this kind of work said that if the city cracks down on the topless women, they want to make sure that any restrictions apply to the topless men, too, such as the Naked Cowboy.
