LOS ANGELES, CA – Why would anyone gun down a young woman walking down the street with her boyfriend and then calmly stroll away? Los Angeles police now have their suspect, and say the slaying had to do with money.
Carrie Jean Melvin, 30, and her boyfriend were walking near their apartment to grab a bite along Hollywood’s famed Sunset Boulevard on July 5 when a man fired a single shotgun blast, killing Melvin.
The gunman then calmly walked to a black sedan, which drove off.
On Friday, police arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of Melvin’s murder. Ezeoma Obioha remains in custody with bail set at $1 million.
Police say Obioha and Melvin were involved in a “financial dispute,” but wouldn’t elaborate beyond that.
The fatal shooting took place just blocks away from the Hollywood and Highland intersection, a hot spot among tourists and the location of the Dolby Theater — home of the Academy Awards.
“It’s a good community, the crime rate is relatively low, we don’t have many incidents that occur in the area,” John Skaggs, a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, said at the time.
For a time, the shooting had left police mystified, as did the suspect’s choice of weapon: a shotgun.
