MONROE, N.Y. — An Orange County post office is being named in honor of a hometown hero who was killed while serving as a CIA officer in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney introduced legislation to name the Monroe post office for Central Intelligence Agency NCS Officer Gregg David Wenzel. On Monday, Maloney will unveil a plaque honoring Wenzel.
Wenzel graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School and the State University at Binghamton.
He got his law degree at the University of Miami and worked as a public defender in Miami before taking a job with the Florida Bar Association.
Wenzel joined the CIA after September 11th, and was a member of the first post-September 11 class. He was serving his first assignment abroad at age 33, when he died on July 9, 2003.
