A elderly Jewish tourist from Miami ,Florida, died after being hit by a yellow taxi driver on the upper East Side of Manhattan Saturday afternoon, Police said.
The victim, identified as Amelia Sterental, 76, was walking with her husband when at around 2:45pm, while standing on the corner of East 60th Street and Madison avenue, a yellow SUV struck her.
EMS responded to the scene and transported Mrs. Sterentalt to NY Cornell Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.
NYPD’s 19th precinct officers and Highway Collision Investigation squad responded to the scene. After interviewing several witnesses, investigators determined that Mrs. Sterentalt was crossing the street on the crosswalk when the taxi made a left turn on to East 60th Street and struck her. She was dragged by the taxi after she was struck, according to witnesses at the scene.
Police are reviewing video cameras to determine if the victim had the right of way when the taxi driver made the turn.
The taxi driver, a 57-year-old man from Queens, was not charged as of Saturday night. He and the 3 passengers who where inside the cab were not injured, police said.
