BUCHANAN – No one was injured in a transformer fire at the Indian Point 3 nuclear plant in Buchanan, Westchester County on Saturday afternoon.
OEM says the fire was located within the power plant complex, did not impact, and was not located in the nuclear area of the facility.
The fire brigade within the facility worked on putting out the fire with assistance from the Verplanck Fire Department.
The fire was quickly placed under control, and there were no reports of evacuations or injuries.
Governor Andrew Cuomo arrived at Indian Point, and was briefed on the situation shortly after 8 p.m.
Governor Cuomo said that the transformer that caught fire leaked a lot of oil. A spokesperson for the plant says that some oil has leaked into the Hudson River.
Governor Cuomo also said he does not feel as if he can say whether Indian Point did everything correctly just yet until he comes back on Sunday for a complete debriefing point-by-point.
It was not immediately clear what caused the failure, or whether the transformer would have to be replaced. Entergy spokesman Jerry Nappi said there was no radioactive release. It’s unclear how long Unit 3 will be down.
The company’s Unit 2 plant was not affected.
The Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, supplies electricity for homes, businesses and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
Unit 3 had been shut down Thursday morning for an unrelated issue, a water leak on the non-nuclear side of the plant. It was repaired and there was no radioactive release, Nappi said. In March, Unit 3 was shut down for a planned refueling that took about a month.
