A person who scaled and cleared the White House fence on Sunday night was immediately arrested, the Secret Service said.
An individual climbed over the fence on the south side of the White House complex, U.S. Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said in a statement. The jumper cleared the fence at approximately 10:35 p.m. on Sunday. Uniformed Division officers arrested the the suspect immediately and charges were pending, Leary said.
The successful arrest comes as the reputation of the high-profile federal agency charged with protecting the president suffers from a series of embarrassing incidents.
A senior supervisor was suspended early this month over allegations of unwanted sexual advances toward a co-worker, and, more recently, a uniformed division officer assigned to the Foreign Missions branch was charged with misdemeanor destruction of property.
Scrutiny over the Secret Service’s ability to protect the White House was called into question last fall when a knife-wielding intruder was able to scale the fence and make it deep inside the White House.
