WEST NYACK, N.Y. — Police in Rockland County are warning residents about a possible scam after a woman reported getting a call from a man who told her that her computer had been attacked by Russian hackers.
The 20-year-old West Nyack woman said the caller instructed her how to give him remote access to her computer and then told her she’d have to pay up to $5,000 to keep her files and financial information safe, Clarkstown Police said.
The files were all deleted and could not be retrieved after she refused to pay, police said.
Although the victim did not lose any money, police said her information has been compromised.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of this scheme is being urged to contact their local police department.
